Dear Citizens’ Stamp Advisory Committee Members,

Support for new series:
Women of distinction: the 1970’s, photographed by Diana Mara Henry

A life was changed, including mine, when I watched the struggle my mother was going through with a divorce in the 70's having been out of the work force for 30 years. The "spark" she received from the Women's Conference in Houston in 1977 brought out a new, stronger, woman who was ready to take on the world, or at least the world in her back yard.

I happened to be one of the torch carriers as the Women's Conference opened in Dec. of 1977. Donna DeVarona was there too (I loaned her some shorts to wear) as we carried the torch in to the convention center and handed it to the first ladies.

There were so many inspirational women in the 1970's who, inspired so many of us to believe in what we were doing and to have the courage to accomplish our dreams. I hope you will consider featuring some of them on the stamp series for the USPS which has been proposed to you. My favorites? Congresswoman Barbara Jordan, Betty Friedan and Bella !

So many of us hope you approve this new series for the USPS.

Sincerely,

Peggy Kokernot Kaplan (That's me --3rd from the right in the photo, 30 yrs. ago with Representative Bella Abzug, Betty Friedan, and Billie Jean King)
